WAR, Inc. Setup Instructions and Walk-through
for 2/17 Alpha Demo Version
--------------------------------
From Interactive Magic and Optik
--------------------------------
-------------------------------
SETTING UP AND RUNNING THE DEMO
-------------------------------
WAR, Inc. is still in early development and
has not yet been optimized for play in Win95.
For this early working version, you must Restart in
MS-DOS Mode and run the game from there.
By default, the demo is installed into the \i-magic\wardemo
directory on your C drive. Assuming you installed the game
to this default location, the procedure for configuring
your sound hardware is as follows:
If you are in Windows 95, click on
Start --> Shut Down --> Restart in MS-DOS Mode
and choose Yes.
Once in DOS, type the following, pressing [ENTER] at the end
of each line:
c:
cd \i-magic\wardemo
setup
Follow the instructions to set the demo up for use with your
sound card.
You only need to run 'setup' once. From then on, you can type
the following to run the game:
c:
cd \i-magic\wardemo
warinc
Once again, Windows 95 users must Restart in MS-DOS mode to
play the demo. This early version is not yet optimized
for Windows 95.

Start of the Game:
You will be sitting in your office. You can
do a number of things at this point. fOR EXAMPLE, On the left
you can view the Stock Market, though it is non-functional
in the demo. You don't have to play the market in the full
game, but if you make some cash, you can use it to design
and build more units.
If you click above your "desk blotter" you will activate the
Unit design screen and the Technology screen. Here you can
design the ultimate machines of destruction. Available
technologies are limited in the demo version, and you cannot hire
additional scientists to advance your technologies. Many more
Hull Types, Weapons, etc., will be available in the full game.
DESIGNING A UNIT:
You will have to balance size requirements with space available and
weight. Otherwise you could create a huge gun that travels at
2 miles per hour.
To create a unit: First click on an "Empty" slot, then choose NEW
from the "saved designs" menu on the right of the screen.
You can choose the body type, and the sub-type. Add weapons, armor,
etc, and you can see the changes on the left. Go up to Unit Name and
name the thing, then hit SAVE. Ta-da.
You will need a few different types to get a good battle going.
** A saved game is provided with the demo that has several additional
units pre-designed. To load that game, press the 'O' key or
click on the bottom of the Office screen, and load
the saved game entitled 'More Units.' **
CHOOSING A MISSION:
Go back to the office and click on the monitor on the
ceiling.
From here you can choose from a list of "missions" available.
There will be a total of twenty to twenty-six "missions available
in the full game, as well as video and voiceover in the briefings.
Each "mission" will have at least three objectives. Some may have
roving bands of bad guys that will attack your base HQ. So you
will have to leave some forces at "home" to protect your HQ.
Once you choose a mission, and get the briefing, you will see a map.
Choose ENTER BASE HQ from the bottom of the screen. This takes you to
your HQ where you have to build up you base and forces.
BASE BUILDING
When you begin a mission, the first thing you should do is start
building your Base. Click on 'Enter Base HQ' to start.
You will need Engineers (the little guys in white outfits
with toolboxes) to perform all of your base-building. In order
not to run out of Engineers (and thus be unable to build anything
else) it is important to do the following when you first enter
the Base HQ.
1. Select an Engineer (right-click on him) and send him into
your Command Center (left-click on the Command Center). Your
Command Center is now staffed and operational.
2. Right-click on the Command Center. A menu appears on the
toolbar showing options for materials to airdrop into your base.
Left-click on 'BLD' (Buildings) and left-click again on
'In-Vitro Tank.' Left-click one last time on the location where
you would like the supplies airdropped.
3. Once the supplies have been dropped, select your other
Engineer and send him to construct the In-Vitro Tank
(right-click on the Engineer, then left-click on the supplies).
He will then build the structure for you.
4. When the In-Vitro Tank is completed, right-click on it
and select Engineer from the menu now appearing on the toolbar.
This begins the process of cloning another Engineer. You will
need one Engineer for each facility you wish to build and operate.
Once you have an operative In-Vitro Tank, you can more freely
experiment with building other structures.
5. The process for building more facilities is the same as the
one used for building the In-Vitro tank. Airdrop the supplies,
then send an Engineer to build and operate the facility. Not all
structures require an Engineer - defensive emplacements
(turrets, towers, etc.), for example, do not.
6. The other critical facility (besides the In-Vitro Tank) to
build is the Nanite Manufacturing Facility. This facility uses
nanotechnology to replicate your unit designs in the field.
Or, in plainer English, it builds your tanks and helicopters and
stuff. Once you have a Nanite Manufacturing Facility, you can
start building up your forces.
MODIFYING FORCES
If you want to go on the offensive, you will need to build a
Strike Force. You can have up to four Strike Forces roaming
around the campaign map at any time, but first you will need
to know how to assign units to one of your four Forces. Build
some units in your Base HQ, then do the following:
1. Press 'ESC' from the Base HQ map to return to the Campaign
Map.
2. Click on the 'Modify Forces' tab at the top of the screen.
When the Modify Forces screen appears, you will see a menu
displaying one Force on the left and another on the right
(or you may see two copies of the same Force).
3. On the left side, click on the 'Base HQ' tab. On the
right, click on the 'Alpha' tab. Strike Force Alpha should
be empty at this time.
4. You can select various Air, Ground, and Infantry units
currently stationed in your Base HQ and reassign them to
Strike Force Alpha (using the arrow-shaped buttons). Beware
of mixing unit types, though! Your Strike Force will move only
as fast as the slowest unit assigned to it, so if you send
infantry along with attack helicopters, the entire Strike Force
will roam around the campaign map at walking speed. You can,
however, pre-load infantry onto transport vehicles to alleviate
this problem.
5. When you are happy with your Strike Force Alpha, click on
'Accept' to return to the Campaign Map. You can then select
Alpha and click on a destination on the map for the Strike Force
to travel to. If you want to attack an enemy base, for example,
you should send Alpha to one of the red targets.
Now you're ready to fight!!
